commonsku's second-half 2026 roadmap is a useful signal for the promotional-products industry.
The company is moving beyond AI features such as mockup generation and description rewriting toward an automation engine and agent-like behavior that can notice stalled work, create follow-up tasks, surface opportunities, and help build presentations.
That direction makes sense. AI is most useful when it appears inside the workflow instead of forcing users to visit another destination.
It also highlights an important distinction: native platform AI and cross-system AI are complements, not substitutes.
Native agents know the platform deeply
commonsku has something an outside tool cannot perfectly recreate: rich native context about projects, orders, suppliers, clients, permissions, and platform state.
An agent built inside commonsku can use that context elegantly. If the work begins and ends in commonsku, native automation will often be the cleanest answer.
Distributors should use it.
The business process usually extends past the platform boundary
The problem is that a merch company does not operate in one application.
The customer request may arrive through Gmail. A company store may live elsewhere. A supplier requires a portal check. A client has a custom spreadsheet. A decorator uses another system. Accounting happens in QuickBooks. A carrier portal has the tracking event. An internal approval happens in Teams or email.
The project record can be centralized while the work remains distributed.
Integration is not the same as execution
An API can move structured data between systems. That is valuable.
But many workflows contain unstructured and browser-only steps: read this attachment, decide which record it belongs to, open this portal, check a field, compare it to a rule, download a file, update another system, then ask a human if the variance is too high.
That is a sequence of work, not merely a data connection.
This is where an agent with its own desktop can extend the native platform rather than compete with it.
Think of the ERP as the system of record and the agent as the operator
A useful architecture is simple.
Keep commonsku as the system of record for the work it owns. Use commonsku's native automation where it is strongest. Use a cross-system agent to perform the repetitive work that happens around it.
The agent can log in, retrieve information, enter data, upload documents, and maintain the workflow across tools. It does not need to become the new database.
This is a healthier model than forcing every problem into one platform.
The best AI stack will be layered
The future of promo software is unlikely to be one giant AI product that replaces everything.
More likely, core systems will become smarter internally while execution agents become better at moving across systems externally.
That gives distributors two advantages: deeper intelligence where their data lives and less manual work where their systems meet.
